What is myopia?
Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry while close-up details remain clear. It happens when the eye is too long or the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) is too curved. This causes light to focus in front of the retina (the back part of the eye) instead of directly on it, resulting in difficulty seeing objects at a distance.
If left unchecked, myopia can worsen over time, increasing the risk of more serious eye conditions.
This includes:
- Retinal detachment – when the retina, the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye, becomes loose
- Myopic macular degeneration – damage to the macular, the middle part of the retina, causing central vision loss
- Glaucoma – a group of conditions causing damage to the optic nerve
- Cataracts – a clouding of the eye’s lens.

Who is at risk of myopia?

Signs and symptoms of myopia

- Squinting or blinking frequently to see clearly

- Holding books or tablets close to the face
- Blurry vision when trying to focus on objects far away
- Frequently rubbing eyes.
