Children’s Eye Examination

Children’s vision plays a crucial role in their development – from learning in the classroom to exploring the world around them. At Hill Vision, we believe healthy eyes start with early care. We’re proud to offer gentle, thorough eye examinations for children from the age of 3 onwards, in a welcoming environment designed to help them feel at ease.

Why are children’s eye exams important?

Youngsters often don’t realise they’re having trouble seeing. In fact, they may assume what they see is “normal” – even if their vision is blurry or strained.

Regular eye examinations help ensure your child’s eyes are developing as they should and allow us to identify any concerns before they begin to affect learning, behaviour, or confidence.

The power of early detection

The sooner we identify a vision issue, such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (eye turn), the easier it is to treat. Timely intervention not only supports your child’s learning and development now, but also helps protect their vision in later life, reducing the risk of more serious complications in the future.

Common childhood vision issues

Some of the most common sight problems we see in children include:

  • Short-sightedness (myopia) – difficulty seeing details in the distance
  • Long-sightedness (hyperopia) – struggling to focus on near objects
  • Astigmatism – blurred vision due to the shape of the cornea (the clear, curved front surface of the eye that helps focus light)
  • Amblyopia – reduced vision in one eye
  • Strabismus – misalignment of the eyes

Common signs of vision issues

Since youngsters may not realise they have a sight problem, here are some signs that may indicate they’re struggling to see:

  • Squinting or narrowing their eyes to see clearly
  • Sitting very close to the television or holding books/devices near their face
  • Complaining of headaches or tired eyes
  • Rubbing their eyes frequently
  • Tilting or turning their head to look at things
  • Difficulty concentrating, especially during reading or homework
  • Avoiding activities that require clear vision, such as reading or sports
  • Falling behind at school or showing signs of frustration
  • Blinking excessively or struggling with bright light.

Our myopia management services

In today’s digital world, more and more children are experiencing myopia, meaning they struggle with distance vision.

Our myopia management solutions include MiSight® 1 day contact lenses and MiYoSmart spectacle lenses, are both designed to slow the progression of myopia in young, developing eyes.

What about contact lenses for kids?

We offer contact lenses for children aged 7 and over. They’re a great alternative to glasses – especially for active youngsters and teens, or those who prefer not to wear specs during sports or everyday activities. Our experienced team will guide you and your child through the fitting process and ongoing care, ensuring they feel confident and comfortable every step of the way.
