Eye Examination

Routine eye examinations are essential to keep your vision sharp and your eyes healthy for years to come. At our practice, we take a thorough and individualised approach with each patient, ensuring they receive a comprehensive assessment in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

Every eye test is undertaken by registered optometrist Amit Mandla, who is committed to providing expert care and clear explanations every step of the way. Uniquely, Amit also has the power to prescribe—something not many opticians can do—and can refer patients privately if needed for procedures such as LASIK or cataract surgery.

The importance of routine eye exams

Did you know that 50% of sight loss could be avoided? This is why having your eyes tested regularly is crucial. Eye exams not only help us determine if you need glasses or contact lenses, but they also allow us to detect early signs of serious eye conditions including:

  • Glaucoma, which causes damage to the optic nerve.
  • Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens.
  • Age-related macular degeneration, which affects the central vision.

In some cases, eye assessments also reveal underlying health issues such as high blood pressure or diabetes, providing a crucial link to your overall well-being.

How often should you have an eye exam?

The NHS recommends having your eyes tested at least every two years, or more frequently if advised by your optometrist. Children, people over 70, and those with certain health conditions may need more frequent check-ups.

If you notice any changes to your sight or are experiencing discomfort – don’t wait. Book an appointment as soon as possible.

What to expect during your eye exam

We understand that every person’s eyes and visual needs are different. That’s why each eye examination is tailored to the individual. An appointment typically lasts around 45 minutes, although additional tests such as OCT (optical coherence tomography) may take a bit longer.

During your check-up, we’ll take the time to thoroughly assess your eyes and explain each step of the process.

This will include:

Your medical history and symptoms: We’ll review any relevant health information and discuss any concerns or changes in your vision.

Prescription assessment: We check your vision to determine whether you need glasses or an updated prescription.

Eye health: We perform a thorough check of your eye to look for any early signs of conditions.

This includes:

  • The cornea – the clear surface of the eye, and lens, that helps focus light.
  • The retina – the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye that captures images.
  • The optic nerve – the nerve that sends visual information to the brain.

Eye muscle test: We assess the function of your eye muscles to ensure proper eye movement and alignment.

Visual Fields: This test checks for any loss of peripheral vision (side vision), which could indicate underlying conditions.

Intraocular pressure test: We measure the pressure inside your eyes to screen for glaucoma.

Conclusion and advice: Based on the results, we provide a detailed summary and any necessary advice or treatments.

Additionally, we screen for common eye conditions such as Blepharitis, inflammation of the eyelids, and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, where the oil-producing glands in your eyelids don’t function properly. Both can cause irritation and discomfort if left untreated. We also offer a free dry eye assessment with every test.
